1. The short version
layr is a place to record a short video with other people. To do that we need your recordings, a name to put on them, and enough about your device to put your layer in time. We do not sell anything about you, we do not run advertising, and we do not track you across other apps or websites.
2. What we collect, and why
Things you give us
- A handle and display name. So people know whose layer is whose.
- An email address. Used to sign you in and to get you back into your account if you lose your phone. We do not send marketing email.
- A profile picture, if you add one.
- Your date of birth. See section 3, because we treat this differently from everything else.
- Video and audio you record. This is the point of the app.
- Comments and reactions you leave on other people's layrs.
Things your device tells us
- Audio latency. Every phone adds a small delay between sound coming out and sound going in, and no two models add the same amount. We read that number from your device and store it with your take so your layer lands in time rather than slightly late. It says nothing about you.
- Basic technical information needed to deliver the app: app version, operating system, and errors when something breaks.
Things we work out
- What you tend to watch and make. Which tags and kinds of layr you engage with, so the stage can put things you are more likely to care about nearer the top. This never hides anything from you. It only changes the order.
- An age band. See section 3.
We do not collect your location, your contacts, your photo library, or anything from other apps. The camera and microphone are used only while you are recording, and only after you allow it.
3. Your birthdate
We ask for your date of birth once, when you claim a handle. We use it to check you are old enough to be here, and to work out a broad age band, for example "16 to 18".
The band is the only part that travels. It is attached to layrs you start so the app can put people nearer their own age together. Your actual date of birth is never shown to anybody, never attached to a layr, and never leaves our database. The bands are deliberately wide enough that nobody can work your age out from what they see.
4. Who can see what
- Layrs you publish are public inside the app. Anybody using layr can see them, including your handle, your picture and your video.
- Comments and reactions are public on the layr they belong to.
- Your email address and date of birth are never public.
- Blocks are private. Nobody is told they have been blocked.
- Reports are private. The person reported is not told who reported them.
Anything public in the app can be seen, recorded or shared by other people. Please treat it as public, because it is.
5. Companies that handle it for us
We are a very small operation and we use other companies to run parts of the service. They process your information on our instructions and are not allowed to use it for their own purposes.
- Supabase, for the database, file storage and sign in.
- Fly.io, for the servers that stitch everybody's layers into one video.
- Expo, for delivering app updates.
- Apple and Google, for distributing the app itself.
- An automated content screening provider, which looks at uploaded video to catch material that is not allowed here. See the Terms.
We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it for advertising. If we are ever legally required to hand something over, we will, and we will tell you unless we are forbidden from doing so.
6. How long we keep it
- Your layrs and layers stay until you delete them or delete your account.
- Your account stays until you delete it.
- Reports and moderation records are kept for up to two years after the fact, because a pattern of behaviour is the only way to deal fairly with repeat problems.
- Error logs are kept for up to 90 days.
7. Deleting your account
Settings, then delete account. It is in the app and it does not require you to email anybody.
This removes your profile, your recordings, your comments and your reactions. One thing survives, and it is worth being honest about: if you took a slot on somebody else's layr, the finished video they made still contains your layer. It is a single video file rather than six separate ones, and we cannot take you out of it without destroying their work. Your name comes off. If you want a finished layr taken down entirely, contact us and we will deal with it.
8. Children
layr is for people aged 13 and over. We do not knowingly collect anything from anybody under 13. If you believe a child under 13 is using layr, email us and we will remove the account and everything in it.
If you are under 18, please read the Terms with a parent or guardian.
9. Your rights
Wherever you live, you can ask us to show you what we hold about you, correct it, or delete it. Depending on where you live you may also have the right to object to some uses of it, or to receive a copy in a portable form. Email us and we will do it. We will not make you jump through hoops, and we will not charge you.
If you are in the UK or the EU, our lawful basis for processing is performance of a contract with you for the parts the app cannot work without, and legitimate interests for safety, moderation and keeping the service running.
10. Changes, and how to reach us
If we change this in a way that matters, we will tell you in the app before it takes effect rather than quietly updating the date at the top.
